Publications
In-depth retrospectives and generally interesting
articles. MOJO radio is now available here, too.
Once a fine music magazine, Q's archive of album
reviews can be interesting.
Entertainment listings in London.
This brilliant 'new music' magazine from the 1980s
is now online with a searchable archive and updated listings.
Fantastic newer intelligent music and entertainment
magazine edited by Mark Ellen (who has edited Mojo, Q and Arena and even
presented the Old Grey Whistle Test), with
David Hepworth (also presented Whistle Test and anchored the Beeb's
coverage of Live Aid, edited Q & Mojo as well as Empire) as Creative Director. A refreshing change from Q,
which bizarrely now seems to be steering itself towards the R&B/hip-hop
market for children just old enough to read.

Retailers
The ultimate online retailer, selling
CDs, DVDs, books and so much more now. Its selection is vast and its
customer service can be applauded. Amazon's usually high postage
charges tend to be discouraging, but they are now running a promotion
whereby postage is free when you purchase a certain easily reachable
minimum. Amazon also allows you to build Wishlists that your family
and friends can view.
The original American site of the
above, with numerous audio samples available.
The bookstore (but sadly not the
online site) sells DVDs and CDs but,
more importantly, has some wonderful in-store appearances where artists
perform and sign their latest album. The store always creates a
pleasant atmosphere, although it may be a bit surreal to see your
favourite musician performing amongst the self-help books. Or
perhaps appropriate....
Excellent DVD retailer in Canada that
does not charge shipping. Pay attention to the maximum amounts
allowed before custom charges kick in, though.
 | Fish Records
Highly recommended site with singer-songwriter, folk and acoustic
music for sale. Set up by a fan who had difficulty finding the records he wanted
so he's filled that niche.
Excellent at recommending new artists and includes an MP3 sampler,
personal service, and quick deliveries.

GEMM
|
Hard-to-find music, new and
used--like E-bay without the bidding. Look here first for hard to
find items; if GEMM does not have it,
it must not exist. You can even set up a want list and you will be
e-mailed whenever they get new stock by that artist. It is not a
store, more of a co-operative of other sellers, though you can frequently
make one transaction through GEMM for a basketful of items from a variety
of sellers on the site.
 | HMV
Good for getting your hands on Irish
artists whose albums might not have been released here as yet. They
tend to take an absolute age to deliver even their normal stock, so don't
order from them if you are in a rush. Their prices and sales online
can be worth investigating even though their higher in-store prices are
rarely good value.

 | Play.com
Fantastic prices for CDs and, in
particular, DVDs. Delivered with no postage charges ever,
although it does take about three days to reach the 'mainland' from its
base in the Channel Islands. Also previously a good source of Region
1 DVDs without having to pay customs, but they have recently split the
shops into UK/US, and whilst I have not yet made a Region 1 purchase under
the new system, it looks suspiciously the same as ordering from the US.
Do check their site when you want a North American CD, such as Neil Finn's
One All, without paying hefty import charges.

Brian Kennedy, Leo Green, Chris Farlowe, Johnny Scott and others. A

Duties & VAT Advice when shopping online -
Note that the maximum amount before these duties kick in on non-EU
purchases is £18. Also,
the dastardly post office lays on a whacking great fee (relatively
speaking) for processing and
collecting the additional tax, so bear both charges in mind when ordering
from overseas. |
